Club History
The Limerick Scorpions, are a wheelchair basketball club based in Limerick, Ireland. season. The club was formed by several individuals in September 2013 who felt that, with its great sporting tradition, Limerick and the surrounding area needed and deserved an all-inclusive club that would allow players of all abilities, whether they have disabilities or not, be involved with other driven people to become better athletes and provide an outlet for people who wanted to play wheelchair basketball. The Scorpions cater for all ages with a Junior team also available for younger sports interested people.
The Scorpions joined the Irish Wheelchair Basketball League for the 2013/14 season.
The commitment is not only placed upon the players at The Scorpions but also those involved in the Committee who help run a more functional club. In a short space of time the club has developed into a league winning team with the Scorpions being crowned National League Champions for the 2014/2015 season.
The club has a very high work ethic and the players are very driven which has seen a development at such a fast pace that sees four scorpions being involved with the Irish National team, two of which have been chosen to represent Ireland in the 2015 European Championships which are taking place in Portugal in July.
Senior Scorpions
The Senior team consists has 10 players on its roster from 16 years of age up to an over 40. They are part of the National League with nine other teams from around Ireland. Each team has to host an event day where all of the teams play one game. These events occur on a 3 to 4 week basis. The Scorpions hosted their event in the University of Limerick this season and was a great success for players and supporters. The Scorpions also host 3 other home games per season. Training takes place in and around the Limerick City region.
Junior Scorpions
The Junior team are presently part of the St. Colms Basketball Club. The Junior team avail of their resources for training and coaching throughout the year. This team targets players who are under 16. The Juniors play a blitz style even on a monthly basis with the day culminating in an All Star event where by players of all the teams are mixed up and social inclusion is at the fore front.
Sponsorship
Running a club is not easy without having finances and at present The Scorpions do not have full time sponsorship. This means we rely on player registration fees and having club self-run fundraising events.
